Here are listed the German U-boats that survived World War Two and were spared from Operation Deadlight for one reason or another or were stationed in the far east when the war in Europe ended. Boats here include the U-boats that were stationed in the far east and were taken over by the Imperial Japanese Navy in May 1945. The remainder of these boats are boats that were used to various trials by the allies.
The following U-boats were taken over by the allies and commissioned into their fleets. 4 XXI boats that the Soviets received (the B-series) were previously used by the British in 1946-1947. The boats taken into japanese service were stationed in the far east as part of the Monson U-boats when the war in Europe ended in May 1945.

The Individual U-boats
- U-181. Type IXD. Launched on 30 Dec 1941 and commissioned on 9 May 1942.
Taken over by Japan at Singapore on 5 May 1945 and became the Japanese submarine I 501 on 15 July 1945.
- U-190. Type IXC/40. Launched on 8 Jun 1942 and commissioned on 24 Sep 1942.
Surrendered on 14 May 1945 at Bay Bulls, Newfoundland.
The boat was taken to St. John's in June and then to Halifax, Canada.
- U-195. Type IXD. Launched on 8 Apr 1942 and commissioned on 5 Sep 1942.
Taken over by Japan at Surabaya, Indonesia on 5 May 1945 and became the Japanese submarine I 506 on 15 Jul 1945.
- U-219. Type XB. Launched on 6 Oct 1942 and commissioned on 12 Dec 1942.
Taken over by Japan at Jakarta, Indonesia on 5 May, 1945 in Batavia and became the Japanese submarine I 505 on 15 July 1945.
- U-234. Type XB. Launched on 23 Dec 1943 and commissioned on 2 Mar 1944.
Surrendered at Portsmouth, New Hampshire on May 19 1945 (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
U-234 was sunk by a torpedo from USS Greenfish during trials approximately 40 miles north-east off Cape Cod, on the US east coast on 20 November, 1947.
- U-262. Type VIIC. Launched on 10 Mar 1942 and commissioned on 15 Apr 1942.
Bombed at Gotenhafen in December 1944. Stricken at Kiel on 2 April, 1945. Broken up in 1947.
- U-471. Type VIIC. Launched on 6 Mar 1943 and commissioned on 5 May 1943.
Bombed in dry dock on 6 Aug, 1944 in the Mediterranean at Toulon, France, in position 43.07N, 05.55E, by bombs from American B-24 Liberator aircraft.
Raised in 1945 and returned to service as French Millé from 1946. Stricken 9 July, 1963 as Q339.
- U-505. Type IXC. Launched on 24 May 1941 and commissioned on 26 Aug 1941.
Captured at sea west of Africa on 4 June, 1944 by ships and Wildcat aircraft of the US Navy task force 22.3, escort carrier USS Guadalcanal, destroyer escorts USS Pillsbury, USS Chatelain, USS Flaherty, USS Jenks and USS Pope.
- U-510. Type IXC. Launched on 4 Sep 1941 and commissioned on 25 Nov 1941.
Surrendered on 9 May 1945 at St. Nazaire, France (Waller and Niestlé, 2010).
Became as the French submarine Bouan. Stricken 1 May, 1959 as Q176. Broken up in 1960.
- U-511. Type IXC. Launched on 22 Sep 1941 and commissioned on 8 Dec 1941.
Sold to Japan at Kure, Japan on 16 Sept 1943 and became the Japanese submarine RO 500.
- U-530. Type IXC/40. Launched on 28 Jul 1942 and commissioned on 14 Oct 1942.
Surrendered in the Mar del Plata, Argentina on 10 July 1945.
Transferred to USA and used for tests. Scuttled during tests on 28 Nov, 1947 north-east of Cape Cod, by a torpedo.
- U-573. Type VIIC. Launched on 17 Apr 1941 and commissioned on 5 Jun 1941.
On 1 May, 1942, badly damaged by depth charges from a British Hudson aircraft (Sqdn. 233/M) in the Mediterranean north-west of Tenes in approx. position 37.00N, 01.00E.
Interned at Cartagena, Spain on 2 May 1942. Sold to Spain on 2 Aug, 1942. Became the Spanish submarine G 7. In service until May 1970.
- U-712. Type VIIC. Launched on 10 Aug 1942 and commissioned on 5 Nov 1942.
Surrendered at Kristiansand-Süd, Norway on 9 May 1945.
Transferred to Loch Ryan, Scotland. Used for tests by the British and broken up at Hayle in 1950.
- U-758. Type VIIC. Launched on 1 Mar 1942 and commissioned on 5 May 1942.
Stricken at Kiel, Germany on 16 March, 1945 after being badly damaged by British bombs. Broken up in 1946-1947.
- U-766. Type VIIC. Launched on 29 May 1943 and commissioned on 30 Jul 1943.
Stricken on 21 Aug, 1944 near La Pallice, in position 46.10N, 01.14W, when unable to put to sea and surrendered to France.
- U-805. Type IXC/40. Launched on 0000 and commissioned on 12 Feb 1944.
Surrendered on 15 May 1945 at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, USA (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
- U-858. Type IXC/40. Launched on 17 Jun 1943 and commissioned on 30 Sep 1943.
Surrendered on 14 May 1945 at Lewes, Delaware, USA (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
Scuttled at the end of 1947 after being used for torpedo trials near New England.
- U-862. Type IXD. Launched on 8 Jun 1943 and commissioned on 7 Oct 1943.
Taken over by Japan at Singapore on 5 May 1945, and became the Japanese submarine I 502, 15 July 1945.
- U-873. Type IXD. Launched on 11 Nov 1943 and commissioned on 1 Mar 1944.
Surrendered at Portsmouth, New Hampshire on 16 May 1945 (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
Broken up after trials in 1948.
- U-889. Type IXC/40. Launched on 5 Apr 1944 and commissioned on 4 Aug 1944.
Surrendered on 13 May 1945 at Shelburne, Canada, in position 43.32N, 65.12W (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
Transferred to Halifax on the 14th. Transferred to the US Navy on 10 Jan, 1946. Scuttled at the end of 1947, after being used for torpedo trials off New England.
- U-926. Type VIIC. Launched on 28 Dec 1943 and commissioned on 29 Feb 1944.
Surrendered on 9 May 1945 at Bergen, Norway (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
- U-953. Type VIIC. Launched on 28 Oct 1942 and commissioned on 17 Dec 1942.
Surrendered on 9 May 1945 at Trondheim, Norway (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
Transferred on 29 May, 1945 from Trondheim, Norway to England.
Broken up after British Navy trials, in 1950.
- U-977. Type VIIC. Launched on 31 Mar 1943 and commissioned on 6 May 1943.
Interned at Mar del Plata, Argentina on 17 August, 1945 after a 66-day submerged trip from Norway.
Surrendered to USA in Boston on 13 Nov, 1945. She was torpedoed off Massachusetts on 13 Nov, 1946 during torpedo trials by the US submarine USS Atule.
- U-995. Type VIIC/41. Launched on 22 Jul 1943 and commissioned on 16 Sep 1943.
Surrendered on 9 May 1945 at Trondheim, Norway (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
Transferred to Norway in Oct 1948.
- U-1054. Type VIIC. Launched on 24 Feb 1944 and commissioned on 25 Mar 1944.
Stricken at Kiel on 16 Sept, 1944, after a collision with the Norwegian motor ferry Peter Wessel near Hela "Tonne 1". In May 1945 surrendered to Britain and later broken up.
- U-1057. Type VIIC. Launched on 20 Apr 1944 and commissioned on 20 May 1944.
Surrendered on 9 May 1945 at Bergen, Norway (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
Transferred to Loch Ryan, Scotland on 30 May, 1945.
- U-1058. Type VIIC. Launched on 11 May 1944 and commissioned on 10 Jun 1944.
Surrendered at Loch Eriboll, Scotland on 10 May 1945.
- U-1064. Type VIIC/41. Launched on 22 Jun 1944 and commissioned on 29 Jul 1944.

- U-1171. Type VIIC/41. Launched on 23 Nov 1943 and commissioned on 22 Mar 1944.

Transferred from Stavanger, Norway to Loch Ryan, Scotland on 29 May, 1945.
- U-1202. Type VIIC. Launched on 11 Nov 1943 and commissioned on 27 Jan 1944.
Surrendered on 9 May 1945 at Bergen, Norway (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
Transferred to Norway in October 1948.
- U-1228. Type IXC/40. Launched on 2 Oct 1943 and commissioned on 22 Dec 1943.
Surrendered at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, USA on 17 May 1945 (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
Scuttled 5 Feb 1946 off the east coast of the USA.
- U-1231. Type IXC/40. Launched on 18 Nov 1943 and commissioned on 9 Feb 1944.
Surrendered on 13 May 1945 at Loch Eriboll, Scotland (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
- U-1305. Type VIIC/41. Launched on 11 Jul 1944 and commissioned on 13 Sep 1944.
Surrendered at Loch Eriboll, Scotland on 10 May 1945 (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
The Walter Boats
- U-1406. Type XVIIB. Launched on 2 Jan 1945 and commissioned on 8 Feb 1945.
Surrendered on 5 May 1945 at Cuxhaven, Germany along with all boats stationed there. Its crew abandoned the boat according to orders.
U-1406 and U-1407 were scuttled by Oblt. Gerhard Grumpelt without permission on 7 May. Read our article U—1406 and U—1407. Were they Scuttled or did they Surrender?.
Later raised and transported to the USA on the deck of the US transport vessel Shoemaker on 15 Sept, 1945. She was used for trials by the US Navy and broken up in New York harbor sometime after 18 May, 1948 (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
- U-1407. Type XVIIB. Launched on 0000 and commissioned on 13 Mar 1945.
Surrendered on 5 May 1945 at Cuxhaven, Germany along with all boats stationed there. Its crew abandoned the boat according to orders.

The Elektro Boats
- U-2326. Type XXIII. Launched on 17 Jul 1944 and commissioned on 10 Aug 1944.
Surrendered at Dundee, Scotland on 14 May 1945.
- U-2353. Type XXIII. Launched on 6 Dec 1944 and commissioned on 9 Jan 1945.
Surrendered on 9 May 1945 at Kristiansand Süd, Norway (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
Transferred from Kristiansand Süd, Norway to Loch Ryan, Scotland on 29 May, 1945.
- U-2513. Type XXI. Launched on 14 Sep 1944 and commissioned on 12 Oct 1944.
Surrendered on 9 May 1945 at Horten, Norway (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
Taken to Oslo on 20 May. Left Oslo for Lisahally, Northern Ireland to which it reached on 7 June.
Transferred to USA in August 1945 and used for trials. Sunk at 24.53N, 83.15W west of Key West, Florida during rocket tests by the destroyer USS Robert A. Owens on 7 Oct, 1951.
- U-2518. Type XXI. Launched on 4 Oct 1944 and commissioned on 4 Nov 1944.
Surrendered on 9 May 1945 at Horten, Norway (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
At Oslo on 3 June and taken to Lisahally, reaching it on 7th June.
- U-2529. Type XXI. Launched on 13 Nov 1944 and commissioned on 22 Feb 1945.
Surrendered on 9 May 1945 at Kristiansand Süd, Norway (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
Transferred from Kristiansand-Süd, Norway to Loch Eriboll, Scotland on 3 June, 1945. Transferred on 7 June to Lisahally.
- U-2540. Type XXI. Launched on 13 Jan 1945 and commissioned on 24 Feb 1945.
Scuttled on 4 May, 1945 near the Flensburg lightship. Raised in 1957. Became the research vessel Wilhelm Bauer in the Bundesmarine, 1 Sept 1960. Transferred to the Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum (German Maritime Museum) at Bremerhaven in 1984.
- U-3008. Type XXI. Launched on 14 Sep 1944 and commissioned on 19 Oct 1944.
The boat left Wilhelmshaven, Germany for patrol on 3 May, 1945.
Surrendered on 21 May 1945 at Kiel, Germany (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
On 21 June 1945 she was taken from Wilhelmshaven to Loch Ryan. Transferred to USA in August 1945. Used for trials. Taken out of service in July 1948. Sunk after demolition tests in May 1954. Broken up at Puerto Rico.
- U-3017. Type XXI. Launched on 5 Nov 1944 and commissioned on 5 Jan 1945.
Surrendered on 9 May 1945 at Horten, Norway (Waller & Niestlé, 2010).
Transferred to Britain. Became the British submarine N 41. Used for tests. Broken up at Newport in November 1949.
- U-3035. Type XXI. Launched on 24 Jan 1945 and commissioned on 1 Mar 1945.
