U-1228 left for a patrol off the Canadian coast, but the outbound boat was ordered to help the disabled U-867. Before they could make contact, U-1228 was bombed and its damaged Schnorchel resulted in a carbon monoxide poisoning of the crew, forcing the boat to abort its patrol.
