Career information

He was married in Singapore on April 8th 1940 to Ariane Philippe, who was working at the French Consulate General there at the time.

His first ship was HMS Frobisher (1933) In 1940 he was serving in a submarine flotilla in Singapore, which was moved to Alexandria later that year. I believe he was the only survivor from this flotilla.

He later served on the Duke of York, probably in 1942 and 1943.

In 1944 he was in command of HMS Ramsey. From 1945 to 1947 he commanded the frigate St Bride's Bay.

I think he was next at the Naval College in Greenwich. I would have to search in his memoirs for more details. In November 1949 he was posted in Bermuda, where, as a member of the admiral's staff, he served on HMS Glasgow, HMS Superb and HMS Sheffield successively. until April 1952 when he returned to England.

As far as I can remember he next served on a Naval air base in Yeovilton, Somerset after which became a member of the staff in Chatham until he left the Navy.

When he left the Royal Navy he became a translator / interpreter for NATO and worked first in Paris, then in Versailles, France, until 1974 or 1975, when he retired and settled in Provence.

He was awarded the OBE in April 1948 for his action in Palestine while commanding St Bride's Bay.

He was a fencer, and was the Royal Navy Epée champion for many years. He also took part with the British team in the World Fencing Championships in Rome in 1957. They won a bronze medal.
