Around 0100 hours USS S-36 (Lt. J.R. McKnight, Jr.) departed from Manila Bay to take up a defensive position off Cape Bolinao. Later that day she arrived in her patrol area. Around 1930 hours she entered Bolinao harbour where she remained until 8 December.

8 Dec 1941
USS S-36 (Lt. J.R. McKnight, Jr.) departed from Bolinao to patrol off Lingayen Gulf.

18 Dec 1941
USS S-36 (Lt. J.R. McKnight, Jr.) ended her 1st war patrol at Mariveles.

30 Dec 1941
USS S-36 (Lt. J.R. McKnight, Jr.) departed from Mariveles for her 2nd war patrol. She was ordered to patrol in the Verde Island Passage.

USS S-36 (Lt. J.R. McKnight, Jr.) makes a torpedo attack on a Japanese merchant of about 5000 GRT off Calapan, Mindoro. She claims a sinking but this was not the case.

USS Porpoise (Lt.Cdr. J.R. McKnight, Jr) torpedoed and sank the Japanese merchant Koa Maru (2032 GRT) near Eniwetok atoll in position 13°10'N, 162°05'E.
