The Hornet took place in carrying some 16 bombers, the first to take off from a carrier in history, to some 400 miles off Japan to take place in the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo. Due to some infiltrations by an enemy patrol boat, the Hornet launched the planes 12 hours ahead of schedule. The patrol boat was sunk. (2)

USS Hornet launched 16 B-25 Mitchell Medium Bombers towards Tokyo. (2)
