HMS Kent (Capt. A.E.M.B. Cunninghame-Graham, RN) embarked a delegation for transportation to Northern Russia. After embarking them she immediately departed. The delegation was made up of the Right Hon. Anthony Eden (Foreign Secretary), the Russian Ambassador, and a party of ten other delegates most of which were staff members for the Foreign Secretary.

The deligation had been brought out from Invergordon to Scapa Flow in the destroyer HMS Somali (Capt. D.K. Bain, RN). (11)

The British minesweepers HMS Hazard (Lt.Cdr. J.R.A. Seymour, RN) and HMS Speedy (Lt. J.G. Brookes, DSC, RN) had departed Archangelsk on 16 December to make rendezvous with convoy PQ 6 encountered the German destroyers Z 23, Z 24, Z 25 and Z 27 in approximate posituion 68°12'N, 40°00'E.

In the resulting gunfight HMS Speedy was damaged by four hits and had to return to Archangelsk. HMS Leda (Lt.Cdr. A.D.H. Jay, RN) was then sent from Archangelsk to take over her escort duties with convoy PQ 6.

At 2315C/17, the British heavy cruiser HMS Kent (Capt. A.E.M.B. Cunninghame-Graham, RN) and the Russian destroyers Grozniy and Sokrushitelny departed the Kola Inlet to support the minesweepers but they did not encountered the German destroyers as they had already retired from the area. They returned to the Kola Inlet around 1300C/18.

A patrolling aircraft reported a submerging U-Boat in position 67°07'N 24°43'W and attacking it with depth charges.

The heavy cruiser HMS Kent (Capt. A.E.M.B. Cunninghame-Graham, RN), which was on patrol in the Denmark Stait, flew off her aircraft to aid in the hunt.

The corvettes HNoMS Eglantine and HMS Mignonette (Lt. H.H. Brown, RNR), which were also on patrol in the Denmark Stait, were ordered to search for the enemy.

At 2017N/14, HMS Eglantine reported that she had obtained an RDF contact in position 67°38'N 24°52'W and was chasing at full speed. The contact could not be seen in the bad visibility of only 1000 yards. The contact outran the corvette.
