1218 hours - Sighted a southbound merchant vessel of about 1000 tons. She was flying no flag, but had Spanish colours painted on her bow, stern and amidships. Started attack. Enemy course was 150°, speed 9 knots.

1248 hours - Fired two torpedoes from 1200 yards. No hits were obtained and the torpedoes were heard to explode on hitting land. It is thought the torpedoes ran under the target which was in ballast. (7)

HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) torpedoed and sank the Danish merchant (in German control) Aalborg (1256 GRT, built 1920) off Cape Bear (near Port Vendres, southern France).

1425 hours - Sighted a northbound merchant vessel of about 1000 tons. Closed to attack. Enemy course was 333°, speed 8.5 knots. 1445 hours - Fired two torpedoes from 2000 yards. Two torpedo explosions were heard.

1448 hours - Asdic picked up breaking up noises. HE had ceased.

1449 hours - At periscope depth. Saw the target to be down by the bow but still upright. Went to 80 feet and retired from the area.

1509 hours - Returned to periscope depth. The target was not sighted. (7)

16 May 1943 (position 37.35, 15.17)
HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) torpedoed and damaged the Italian merchant Nicolo Tommaseo (4573 GRT, built 1943) about 5 nautical miles north-north-east of Catania, Sicily, Italy in position 37°35'N, 15°17'E.

Nicolo Tommaseo was escorted by the torpedo boat Clio. THey had sailed from Catania at 0947 hours for Messina at a speed of 10 knots. The freighter was hit in the stern section and Clio reported to have been missed by two torpedoes and, immediately proceeded to attack the submarine. A passing naval ferry barge (MZ type) was sighted and was ordered to pick up the wounded from the stricken ship and land them at Catania while Clio asked the assistance of a tug. The torpedo-boat kept on hunting the submarine, dropping a total of ten 100-kg depth charges until 1550 hours when the corvettes Driade and Euterpe arrived on the scene and took over the A/S search. Clio then took Nicolo Tommaseo in tow as no tug had yet showed up. Two hours later the tug Littorio arrived and took the freighter in tow back to Catania, the escort being entrusted to the two corvettes while Clio proceeded alone to Messina.

The damaged Nicolo Tommaseo was sunk by Allied aircraft at Catania on 26 July 1943.

1010 hours - Sighted a northbound merchant vessel escorted by a Calypso-class destroyer and one aircraft. Started attack.

1018 hours - The target zigged towards.

1024 hours - The target again zigged towards.

1032 hours - Fired four torpedoes from 1500 yards. One hit was obtained.

1042 hours - Depth charging started.

1058 hours - The last depth charge was dropped. A total of 10 had been dropped but HMS Unruly was not damaged.

1126 hours - Returend to periscope depth. Sighted four aircraft patrolling the area. The merchant vessel was still in the area. Went deep to reload a torpedo tube.

1214 hours - Having reloaded no.1 tube, returned to periscope depth.

1215 hours - Near missed by two small bombs from an aircraft. Retired to 80 feet.

1235 hours - Two more bombs were dropped close. Went to 130 feet. Six more bombs were dropped were dropped singly. Retired to the south-eastward at 130 feet. Carried on reloading which was completed at 1430 hours. (7)

21 May 1943 (position 37.12, 15.30)
HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) attacked the Italian submarine Marcantonio Bragadin with a full salvo off torpedoes to the east of Augusta, Sicily. No hits were obtained.

The Italian submarine was on passage from Lampedusa to Taranto. The four torpedo tracks were sighted just in time and the submarine turned away.

2344 hours - Sighted an outward bound submarine on the port quarter.

HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) torpedoed and sank the Italian merchant Valentino Coda (4485 GRT, built 1924) 19 nautical miles bearing 309° of Cape Vaticano, Italy in position 38°52'N, 15°27'E.

Valentino Coda was proceeding from Naples to Messina escorted by the torpedo-boat Animoso. She was hit by two torpedoes and sank by the stern, the torpedo-boat hunted the submarine four four and a half hours and returned to pick up the survivors who had taken to three lifeboats, three men were missing.

0200 hours - Fired four torpedoes from a range of 3500 yards. About 2.5 minutes later two explosions were heard.

HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) attacked a southbound submarine near Cape Vaticano. No hits were obtained. Shortly before another southbound submarine had already been sighted but no attack could be made.

1435 hours - Sighted a southbound Italian submarine near Cape Vaticano. Range was 6000 yards and she was unable to attack. This was most likely the Italian Flutto which had left Bonifacio the day before and was proceeding to her patrol area off Catania through the Straits of Messina.

1550 hours – Sighted a second southbound submarine thought to be a German u-boat. This was actually the Italian Bronzo. She had sailed from Pozzuoli the day before and was proceeding to her patrol area off Syracuse. Started attack. enemy course was 160°, speed 14 knots.

1605 hours – Fired four torpedoes from 3000 yards. No hits were obtained as the enemy was seen to alter course after the torpedoes had been fired. Position was approximately 38°36'N, 15°40'E.

This was actually the Italian Bronzo. She had sailed from Pozzuoli the day before and was proceeding to her patrol area off Syracuse. (7)

HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) attacked the Italian submarine Benedetto Brin off Cape Vaticano near Messina, Sicily, Italy in position 38°35'N, 15°49'E. The Brin had sailed from Bonifacio the day before and after initially ordered to a patrol area north of the Galite Islands, she was then ordered to an area north of Cape San Vito (Sicily) and then again switched to an area between Catania and Syracuse. The British were under the impression that the submarine had been sunk. In fact the submarine Acciaio is often listed as being sunk by HMS Unruly but this was not the case as her target was clearly the Brin which escaped without damage.

2022 hours - Sighted a southbound Italian submarine. Started attack.

2049 hours - Fired four torpedoes from 3000 yards. The first torpedo hit the target two minutes after firing. The other three torpedoes hit the coast and exploded. Actually, all missed as Brin sighted the submerging British submarine at a distance of 1500 metres and took avoiding action. (7)

15 Aug 1943
HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) torpedoed and damaged the Italian tanker Cesco (6161 GRT, built 1917) in position 027°, Pedagne Light, 2.3 nautical miles (off Brindisi, Italy).

The Cesco was en-route from Brindisi to Valona and was escorted by the Italian torpedo boat Enrico Cosenz and the Italian corvettes Pomona and Chimera. Following the attack Unruly was depth charged by corvette Pomona.

Later the same day HMS Unruly attacked another convoy. This convoy was made up of the Italian merchants Goggiam (1994 GRT, built 1922) and Citta di Spezia (2474 GRT, built 1929). The Italian tugs Nettuno and Asinara. They were escorted by the Italian auxiliary Lubiana. Four torpedoes were fired at both of the merchant ships but no hits were obtained. Position of this attack was 40°52'N, 17°58'E.

1025 hours - Sighted a southbound tanker escorted by two Gabbiano-class corvettes and a old type torpedo boat. A flying boat was overhead. The corvettes were stationed on either bow and the destroyer was on the port quarter. Started attack.

1036 hours - The tanker was seen to be of about 5000 tons and was in ballast.

1050 hours - Fired four torpedoes from 1300 yards. Enemy course was 114°, speed 8 knots. Two torpedo hits were heard. Another torpedo was heard exploding on hitting the land. Unruly had gone deep on firing.

1130 hours - Returned to periscope depth. Sighted the target being beached. A corvette was on our starboard quarter at a range of only 500 yards so immediately went deep again.

1132 hours - The corvette must have sighted us as she dropped a pattern of 13 depth charges fairly close.

1159 hours - Another pattern of 13 depth charges was dropped. This was a bit further off.

1220 hours - Another pattern of 13 depth charges was dropped. A long way off.

1240 hours - Returned to periscope depth. Continued to retire from the area.

1250 hours - Commenced reload.

1415 hours - Stopped reload and stopped all auxiliary machinery as a corvette came near.

1515 hours - Continued reload. A number of masts could be seen to the eastward. These are thought to be A/S vessels.

1544 hours - Identified the masts and funnels of one of these ships as a nothbound tanker about 10 nautical miles offshore. Altered course to close and started attack.

1550 hours - Reload was completed.

1628 hours - Fired four torpedoes at two targets in this new convoy, a tanker and a liner. The convoy's course was 310°, speed 5 knots. Range on firing was 5200 yards. No hits were obtained. (7)

This was most probably the Italian merchant Marco (1487 GRT, 1901) which had sailed at 0600/5 from Durazzo for Gravosa.

HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) heavily damaged the German landing barge F 496 with gunfire east of Amorgos. Several other ships were lightly damaged with gunfire.

0401 hours - In position 36°46'N, 25°58'E sighted a number of darkened ships to the southward. Closed and then altered to a parallel course and maintained position on the contacts port beam.

0456 hours - Turned in to attack.

0501 hours - Fired four torpedoes on the swing aimed at the four rear ships. Range was about 1000 yards. No hits were obtained. On firing transmitted a contact signal in the hope it might lead our surface forces to this convoy. The attack appears not to have been noticed by the emeny.

0506 hours - Set of in chase of the convoy.

0600 hours - Gun action stations. Position was now 36°49'N, 26°16'E. Opened fire on the rear Siebel ferry. The second round hit and after two more hits, shifted target to the next Siebel ferry which was hit twice. The first target was now on fire. The gun then malfunctioned. After it was cleared one round was fired at the larger merchant vessel. It hit. Fire was then shifted to a Siebel ferry coming out of the smoke. Hit it at least twice. The merchant then also came out of the smoke and fire was re-opened on this ship. It was hit eight times. It was then seen to be stopped and being abandoned. Altered course to the east to set off in chase of the remainder of the convoy. During the chase they opened fire on Unruly and therefore the chase was abandoned at 0635 hours.

Beside the above mentioned F 496, the convoy attacked was made up of the German merchant vessel Olympos (852 GRT, built 1904), the landing barges F 308, F 327, F 336, F 494 and F 532. They were escorted by UJ 2111. Shortly afterwards this convoy was attacked and destoyed by the British light cruisers HMS Sirius (Capt. P.B.W. Brooking, DSO, RN) and HMS Penelope (Capt. G.D. Belben, DSC, AM, RN) and the British destroyers HMS Faulknor (Capt. A.K. Scott-Moncrieff, DSO, RN) and HMS Fury (Lt.Cdr. T.F. Taylor, RN). (7)

HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) torpedoed and sank the German auxiliary minelayer Bulgaria (1188 GRT, built 1894) south off Amorgos Island, Greece in position 36°43'N, 25°47'E. The Bulgaria was loaded with supplies and soldiers for the island of Kos and was proceeding together with minelayer Drache.

1459 hours - Received a report from aircraft that an enemy convoy was coming towards.

1639 hours - Sighted a ship coming towards. Shortly afterwards sighted a second ship. Two aircraft were seen patrolling the area. Started attack.

1706 hours - In position 36°43'N, 25°47'E fired four torpedoes from 1350 yards. One hit was obtained. HE of the target ceased immediately. On firing Unruly had gone to 100 feet, changed course and silenced all machinery.

1715 hours - Three depth charges were dropped. Close, but they caused no damage to Unruly. Four more depth charges were dropped but these were further off. (7)

1140 hours - Sighted a schooner of approximately 100 tons bearing 074° and coming towards.

1226 hours - Surfaced in position 37°00N, 25°53'E for gun action. Opened fire at a range of 3800 yards. The gun malfuntioned after two rounds. The enemy (flying the German ensign) meanwhile had opened fire so the action had to be broken off.

1235 hours - Dived to periscope depth. The enemy was seen to come towards. Went deep and silenced all machinery.

1246 hours - The first of 8 depth charges was dropped but a long way off. The enemy carried out a hydrohone hunt as she was not fitted with an Asdic.

1305 hours - Returned to periscope depth.

1330 hours - The enemy altered course to the west.

1440 hours - The floatplanes arrived and patrolled the area for a while. (7)

0617 hours - Sighted a 2-masted caique of about 50 tons 5000 yards to the north-east. As dawn was breaking, dived and closed.

0645 hours - Surfaced for gun action on the enemy's port quarter and opened fire at a range of 4000 yards. 30 rounds were fired for only 4 hits due to the heavy weather. The crew of two abondoned ship in a small rowing boat. The range was then closed and 28 more rounds were expanded.

0710 hours - The target sank in position 36°53'N, 26°29'E heaving received a further 8 hits. (7)

6 Dec 1943 (position 37.39, 25.05)
HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) destroyed the Greek caiques SYR 335 / Evangelistria and SYR 636 / Vassiliki with gunfire at Panormos.

0800 hours - Sighted masts of two caiques in Panormos harbour and commenced closing.

1010 hours - In position 37°39'N, 25°04'E fired two torpedoes set to 2 feet, one aimed at each caique from a range of 800 yards. Both torpedoes missed and exploded on hitting the land. Retired from the area. As no guns could be seen on shore decided to return for gun action shortly before dawn.

1430 hours - Commenced closing the harbour again.

1729 hours - Gun action stations. Surfaced in position 37°39'N, 25°05'E and opened fire on the larger caique from a range of 2000 yards.

1750 hours - After expending all ammunition withdrew from the area. The target was not seen to sink but must have bean at least badly damaged. (7)

7 Dec 1943 (position 37.52, 26.57)
HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) attacked the German merchant Leda (4572 GRT, built 1943, former Italian Leopardi) with four torpedoes. No hits were obtained. Leda was escorted by the German destroyers TA 15 (former Italian Francesco Crispi) and the German torpedo boat TA 16 (former Italian Castelfidardo).

2240 hours - Sighted a darkened ship to the west and closed to investigate. Shortly afterwards identified the contact as a large ship and two smaller ships in line ahead.

2247 hours - Dived to complete the attack.

2302 hours - In position 37°52'N, 26°57'E fired four torpedoes at a 2000 tons merchant vessel escorted by two destroyers. No hits were obtained.

2316 hours - A depth charge was dropped.

2318 hours - Two depth charges were dropped but they were a long way off. Two destroyers were seen searching on the starboard quarter. (7)

13 Dec 1943 (position 37.52, 26.54)
HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) fires two torpedoes against the German auxiliary minelayer Drache off Samos, Greece. Both torpedoes missed their target.

The convoy attacked by Unruly was made up of the above mentioned Drache (which was thought to be a merchant vessel). She was escorted by the German destroyers TA 15, TA 14 the German motor torpedo boats S 36, S 55 and the German motor minesweeper R 211. They were en-route from Piraeus to Vathi (Samos).

0505 hours - Sighted two darkened ships to the north-west. Altered course towards. Shortly afterwards other ships were sighted and the whole was identified as a convoy of one merchant vessel escorted by two destroyers (stationed on either quarter) and two 'E'-boats (stationed on either bow).

0534 hours - In position 37°52'N, 26°54'E fired two torpedoes at the merchant vessel from about 1000 yards. No hits were obtained.

At 2115 hours (time zone -2), HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN), sighted an enemy convoy off the north-eastern approaches to the Doro Channel. An attack was started but Unruly was detected by one of the escorting destroyers and forced to dive. The destroyer dropped a single depth charge that caused some minor damage. (7)

10 Jan 1944 (position 38.12, 24.38)
HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) sank the Greek caique PI 116 / Agios Nikolaos with gunfire off Cape Doro, Andros Island, Greece.

Later the same day the Greek caique PI 299 / Themistokles was sunk with gunfire off Cape Gria, Andros, Greece.

1429 hours - Sighted a large caique (about 100 tons) bearing 270°. Course 090°. Started to close.

1641 hours - Surfaced in position 38°12'N, 24°38'E. Opened fire wth the gun from 4000 yards. Fired 10 rounds from this range for 2 hits. Then closed the range to 1500 yards.

1704 hours - By now 36 hits had been fired and many hits had been obtained. The target was on fire and in a sinking condition. Dived.

1717 hours - The fire did not seem to have a very strong hold so surfaced and re-engaged the target. Fired 10 more rounds, all hit.

1723 hours - The target was now buring fiercely. Dived.

2100 hours - Sighted sails of a southbound caique against the land at a range of 10000 yards. Closed.

2209 hours - Engaged a small (estimated 40 tons) caique with gunfire in position 37°55'N, 24°57'E from a range of 1000 yards. 10 Rounds were fired, all hit. The target was seen to sink. (7)

1610 hours - Sighted three caiques inside Panormos harbour. Their seizes were estimated as being 150, 100 and 40 tons. The largest one was heavily laden.

1623 hours - Surfaced in position 37°39'N, 25°05'E at a range of 1000 yards from the caique. All three were then sunk with gunfire. A total of 33 rounds were fired.

1632 hours - Withdrew from the harbour and dived. (7)

HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) sank the Greek sailing vessel PI 997 / Aghios Giorgios (25 GRT) with gunfire north of Syros Island, Greece in position 37°38'N, 24°54'E.

At 1623 hours (zone -2), HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN), surfaced and bombarded an enemy traffic control station on Kandeliusa Island. Four hits were obtained but it appeared not much damage was done but it was hoped that a few Germans had a nasty 20 minutes. (7)

HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) fires four torpedoes against the German tanker Bertha (1810 GRT, built 1922, former French wine tanker Bacchus) in the Doro Channel, Greece. Four torpedoes were fired but all missed their target.

Bertha was escorted by the German destroyer TA 16 and the torpedo boats TA 17 and TA 19. TA 19 was narrowly missed in the attack.

2316/16 - Heard HE bearing 340°. Altered course to the westward in an attempt to get between the land and the target.

2321/16 - Sighted three darkened ships. Altered course towards to attack.

2325/16 - Unruly was on the port bow of all three ships which were seen to be Bertha and two destroyers, one on either bow. Continued the attack.

0020/17 - Fired four torpedoes in position 38°02'N, 24°39'E. On firing altered course to 360 degrees and dived. No hits were obtained.

0052/17 - Surfaced. Withdrew to the northward. (7)

19 Apr 1944 (position 38.26, 25.32)
HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) sank two Greek caiques with gunfire and scuttling charges near Psara, Greece. The first caique sunk was not identified. The second caique sunk was the SYR 591 / Agios Ioannis (38 GRT).

0204 hours - Sighted the caique we were after, closed up the gun crew.

0214 hours - In position 38°12'N, 25°00'E opened fire from 1000 yards range. The target was estimated to be of about 30 tons. Five rounds had been fired before the target sank by the bows having been hit three times. The crew of the caique had abandoned ship and were taken alongside with their dinghy. One was wounded and was taken care off. They were also given fresh water and a loaf of bread before they were left to their own devices. Unruly then set course for Khios.

0515 hours - When just about to dive sighted a caique to the eastward. Started closing on the surface at full speed.

0545 hours - Boarded the caique in position 38°26'N, 25°32'E. The crew had abandoned ship by this time. A demolition charge was placed on board this caique.

0600 hours - The charge exploded and the caique sank instantaneously by the stern. Unruly then set course for the Gulf of Izmir. (7)

21 Apr 1944
HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) sank the Greek caique KAL 98 / Agios Nikolaos (46 GRT) with scuttling charges north of Khios Island, Greece.

1010 hours - In position 38°35'N, 26°07'E sighted a caique bearing 335°, range 8 nautical miles. Closed.

1119 hours - Surfaced in position 38°37'N, 26°02'E and engaged the caique from a range of 3000 yards. On closing it was seen that she was flying the red cross flag above the Greek ensign and had large red crosses on either bow. Decided to board her for examination.

1140 hours - Boarded. Her cargo consisted of oil in drums and a Nazi ensign was found under the Captains pillow. Decided to sink her with a demolition charge.

1150 hours - The charge exploded and the caique sank.

1155 hours - Dived and withdrew to the westward. (7)

HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) departed Malta for her 15th war patrol (14th in the Mediterranean). She was ordered to patrol north of Crete and to conduct a special operation if an opportunity arose. (A folbot party of limpeteers was to be send in Candia harbour should a sutable target be present there.

HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) sank the Greek sailing vessel PI 870 / Evangelistria (12 GRT) with a demolition charge east of Anti-Kythera.

0446 hours - Dived in position 35°50'N, 23°42'E. Shortly before diving a small caique was sighted to the westward steering a course of 190°.

0524 hours - Surfaced and closed up the gun crew. Meanwhile closed the target at speed.

0550 hours - Range was now 1500 yards. The crew of the caique abandoned ship in their dinghy. Went alongside the caique, boarded and placed a demolition charge.

0600 hours - The caique blew up and sank. The crew was then taken prisoner as the patrol was almost over. Set course to the westward on the surface.

0642 hours - Dived in position 35°42'N, 22°58'E and went to 200 feet for passage through the Anti-Kythera Channel. (7)

0140 hours - In position 37°37'N, 25°31'E the officer of the watch sighted what he thought was smoke bearing 330 degrees and about four minutes later this was confirmed by the bright red glow from a ships funnel on the same bearing. On closing the target was seen to be a KT ship escorted by an E or R-boat.

0156 hours - Fired three torpedoes from 1000 yards at the KT ship. No hits were obtained as the enemy altered course after the last torpedo had been fired. It was however thought at that time that the second torpedo had hit th target but this was not the case. (7)

11 Jul 1944 (position 37.37, 25.31)
At 0422 hours HMS Unruly (Lt. J.P. Fyfe, RN) fires four torpedoes at the German merchant KT 18 / Pelikan (834 GRT, built 1944) south-west of Kos, Greece. The torpedoes however miss their target. Pelikan was escorted by the German R-boats R 185, R 211.

0345 hours - In position 36°32'N, 27°37'E heard HE bearing 070° and altered course towards.

0358 hours - Sighted the red funnel glow from a ships funnel some way off. Set course to intercept the enemy.

0402 hours - Identified the target as a KT-ship escorted by two E or R-boats, one ahead and one astern.

0422 hours - Dived as it was now becoming very light. Range to the enemy on diving was 3000 yards.

0426 hours - In position 36°36'N, 27°03'E fired a salvo of four torpedoes from yards. No hits were obtained although a hit was claimed. (7)
