Career information

United States Naval Academy Graduate 1938 National War College Graduate Served on the Cruiser Concord (CL-10) 1939 - 1941), Submarine S-48 (SS-159) 1941 - 1943 then served on the Submarine Parche (384) for six war patrols as her Executive Officer for three war patrols and as her Commanding Officer for three war patrols. Those war patrols earned five battle stars and two Presidential Unit Citation awards for the Parche.

McCrory was awarded the Navy Cross, two Silver Stars, the Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit. After the war (at the age of 31) he commanded one of the first snorkel equipped submarines, the Halfbeak, and later a radar picket submarine division. His other commands were the Destroyer Taussig, the attack Transport Bayfield and the Cruiser St. Paul, all flagships.

He served on staffs of the Joint Chiefs, the Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Fleet and the Commander Submarine Force, Atlantic. He served as Administrative Aide to the Chief of Naval Operations. As Commander Naval Forces, Korea he was awarded his second Legion of Merit. He then served as Commander Amphibious Training Command, Atlantic. His last submarine duty was as officer-in-charge of the Submarine School, New London, CT.

USS Parche (Lt.Cdr. W.W. McCrory) torpedoed and sank the Japanese auxiliary minesweeper Togo Maru (302 GRT) off Todogasaki, Honshu, Japan in position 38°53'N, 142°05'E.

While operating near Todogasaki, USS Parche (Lt.Cdr. W.W. McCrory) sank the Japanese auxiliary minesweeper Misago Maru No.1 (265 GRT) with gunfire in position 38°36'N, 141°41'E and the Japanese guard boat Kosho Maru (302 GRT) also with gunfire in position 38°27'N, 142°13'E.

30 Apr 1945
USS Parche (Lt.Cdr. W.W. McCrory) ended her 5th war patrol at Midway.

25 May 1945
USS Parche (Lt.Cdr. W.W. McCrory) departed from Midway for her 6th war patrol. She was ordered to patrol south and east of Honshu, Japan.
