Notes on event

At 04.13 hours on 12 July 1942 the Siris (Master Harwood Treweeks), dispersed from convoy OS-33, was hit amidships by a stern torpedo from U-201 south of the Azores and sank at 06.26 hours after the U-boat had fired 100 rounds from the deck gun at the vessel. The master, 47 crew members and seven gunners abandoned ship in two lifeboats. 28 survivors in the boat in charge of the chief officer were picked up after ten days by HMS Jonquil (K 68) (LtCdr R.E.H. Partington, RNR), transferred to HMS Ibis (U 99) (Cdr H.M. Darell-Brown, RN) and landed at Milford Haven on 5 August. The lifeboat of the master reached the Cape Verde Islands after 16 days, but one crew member had died of exposure and two more died of pneumonia in a hospital.
