| History | Completed in October 1925. On 15 Mar 1942, the Rotterdam picked up 57 survivors from the British steam merchant Daytonian and landed them at Nassau later that day. The ship had been sunk two days earlier by the Italian submarine Enrico Tazzoli (Fecia di Cossato) about 200 miles northeast of Nassau in position 26°33N/74°43W. | ||
| Notes on event | At 06.29 hours on 27 August 1942, U-511 fired a spread of four torpedoes at convoy TAW-15 about 120 miles south-southeast of Guantanamo and claimed two ships with 17,000 grt sunk and another damaged. The San Fabian and Rotterdam were sunk and the Esso Aruba was damaged. The Rotterdam (Master Willem de Raat) was struck on the port side near the engine room and immediately began to settle by the stern. The survivors abandoned the ship in lifeboats and were picked up by USS SC-522. | ||
