Personal informationA Jewish family (Max Haag and his wife Herta, their sons Heinz and Fritz and their daughter Liese) from Hamburg was aboard Meropi as passengers from Newcastle to Halifax. Max had been incarcerated in the concentration camp Sachsenhausen and fled with his family from Germany to England in December 1938. The two British DEMS gunners who went down with the ship gave up their place in a lifeboat for them and they all survived the sinking, but were put in jail in Canada since their papers went down with the ship.
