Personal information

Son of Ethel G. Bell from Toronto, an Alliance missionary in Côte d’Ivoire. He survived the sinking of West Lashaway with his mother and his sister Mary Ruth. Robert later wrote the book In Peril On The Sea - A Personal Remembrance about his experiences. During the course of his research he got in contact with former crew members of U-66, which led eventually to a gradual forgiveness and actual friendship between former enemies. He was invited to attend a reunion of the U-boat crew in the 1980’s and named as an honorary member of the crew. Particularly the families of Robert Bell of Sarasota and the radio operator Karl Degener-Boning of Bielefeld continue their friendships after all the years.
