Jasper Lewis Temples got a cinder in his eye when USS Bristol was torpedoed and almost stepped into the gap where the ship had been broken in two. He and eleven others were hanging onto a life raft for about 12 hours before being rescued by USS Trippe. Jasper was offered a Purple Heart and turned it down, telling his commanding officer to give it to one of the men's family that lost a son.
