Cyril "Dave" Davies was resting aboard HMS Medway as spare submarine crew member after returning from a patrol. He was having a shower when the ship was torpedoed but managed to escape from down below and was picked up by a destroyer and taken to Haifa, where he was sent to a hospital as he had suffered a broken jaw.
