Personal information

Angus Smith lived in the Outer Hebrides where his family had moved to when he was 3 years old and ran away to sea when he was 14 and changed his date of birth in order to join the Merchant Navy. Angus was injured by the propeller during the sinking of Toward and later remembered that he did not think that the escorts would come back when they left to hunt the U-boat. However, he was rescued and taken to Northern Ireland where he was given the first internal stitches by a Czech doctor. According to his daughter Christine, the sinking and losing so many mates had a profound effect on him. He had a drink of rum every year on the anniversary of the disaster and was always very upset.
