Son of Colonel Charles Henry Dudley Ryder, CB, CIE, DSO and Ida Josephine Ryder (nee Grigg). He was awarded the Victoria Cross for leading the Operation Chariot, the Commando Raid on the dry dock at St. Nazaire on 27/28 March 1942.
