At 11.40 hours on 1 March 1942 U-436 fired a spread of three torpedoes at a steamer of 1500 grt northeast of Cape Teriberskij and reported two hits after 45 and 47 seconds and the subsequent sinking of the vessel. The victim was probably RT-19 Komintern which did not return from fishing off the Gusinaia Banka, Novaya Zemlya, although Soviet sources report the date of loss as 16 March.
