On 22 May 1942 the unescorted Frank B. Baird (Master Charles Swanson Tate) was sunk by gunfire by U-158 east-southeast of Bermuda. The master and 22 crew members were picked up by the Norwegian merchant Talisman and landed at Point Noire, French Equatrorial Africa.
