At 19.00 hours on 11 July 1942 the unescorted and unarmed two-masted schooner Carmen was shelled and sunk by U-166 about 8 miles northeast of Gaspar Hernández, Dominican Republic. One crew member was lost. The survivors reached the nearby coast in a lifeboat.
