Notes on event

Between 04.38 and 04.46 hours on 12 April 1943 U-563 fired five torpedoes at convoy HX-232 about 550 miles east-southeast of Cape Farewell and reported three ships sunk and one damaged. The Pacific Grove and Ulysses were sunk and the Fresno City was damaged (later finished off by U-706 (Zitzewitz)).

The Ulysses (Master Hendrik Jonkman) in station #104 was hit on starboard side in the foreship by one T-3 torpedo and sank by the bow within 7 minutes. The master, 34 crew members and six British gunners (the ship was armed with one 4in and five machine guns) abandoned ship in two lifeboats in fine weather with a heavy swell and was picked up about five hours later by HMS Azalea (K 25) (Lt G.C. Geddes, RNR) and landed at Gourock on 17 April.
