| Notes on event | At 18.01 hours on 15 July 1943 the unescorted Empire Lake (Master Richard John Sproul) was torpedoed and sunk by U-181 about 240 miles east of Madagascar. The master, 24 crew members and six gunners were lost. Five crew members and two gunners landed at Farafangana, Madagascar. | ||
