Notes on event

At 11.15 hours on 8 December 1943 the unescorted Colombia was hit in the bow by one of two torpedoes fired by U-516 and sank about 20 miles north of San Blas Point. The survivors made landfall on Porvenir Island the next day and USS SC-1023 was sent from Cristobal to pick them up, but the ship ran aground at Mandinga Point. USS PC-466 eventually recovered the submarine chaser and both vessels returned to Cristobal with the survivors from Colombia on 11 December.
