Notes on event

On 7 Aug 1944 the unescorted Empire Day (Master Charles Gordon Mallett) was torpedoed and sunk by U-198 about 200 miles east of Dar es Salaam. The master, 33 crew members and eight gunners landed on the island of Zanzibar. The chief officer Robert Courteney Selfe was taken prisoner and lost when the U-boat was sunk on 12 August.
