At 10.55 hours on 10 June 1941 the unescorted Ainderby (Master George Robert Cobb) was torpedoed and sunk by U-552 130 miles west by north of Bloody Foreland. Eleven crew members and one gunner were lost. The master, 27 crew members and one gunner were picked up by HMS Veteran (D 72) (Cdr W.T. Couchman, OBE, RN) and landed at Greenock.
