The patrol vessel USS PCE-847 (Lt. G.B. Gross, USNR) was also in the area as close escort for the submarine.

Knox, USNR) and USS Neunzer (Lt.Cdr. V.E. Gex, USNR).
The 6th destroyer escort of Escort Division 4, USS Pope ( Lt.Cdr. R.J. Montgomery, USNR) did not participate in the exercises.
USS PCE-846 (Lt. F.D. Andruss, USNR) was also in the area as close escort for the submarine.
On completion of the exercises late in the evening USS Pope parted company to escort USS R-9 back to port. Early on the 7th, a crewmember of USS R-9 was lost overboard. A search was undertaken but he was not found.
The remaining ships of Escort Division 4 remained at sea.

Cassleman, USNR, with COMCORTDIV 4, T/Cdr. F.S. Hall, USN on board), USS Flaherty (Lt.Cdr. H.C. Duff, USNR), USS Frederick C. Davis (Lt. J.R. Crosby, USNR), USS Chatelain (Lt.Cdr. D.S. Knox, USNR) and USS Neunzer (Lt.Cdr. V.E. Gex, USNR) were already at sea having conducted A/S exercises.
The escort carrier USS Guadalcanal (T/Capt. B.C. McCaffree, USN, also COMTASKGR 22.7) and he 6th destroyer escort of Escort Division 4, USS Pope (Lt.Cdr. R.J. Montgomery, USNR) departed Bermuda to join the exercises which lasted to the 11th of December.
USS PCE-846 (Lt. F.D. Andruss, USNR), the close escort for the submarine was detached for other duties in the morning of the 8th. The minesweeper USS Indicative (Lt. E.A. Comee, USNR) sailed from Bermuda to take over the close escort duties of the submarine.
