Emblem of Kampfgeschwader 257 (Lions)

Kptlt. Rolf Thomsen, commander of U-1202, was a naval aviator in the "Lions" bomber squadron, Kampfgeschwader 26, for over three years. This unit was the only one in the Luftwaffe equipped with air-launched torpedoes. When he joined the Ubootwaffe in 1943 he used the emblem of his old unit on his new U-boat. The emblem was inscribed "Vestigium Leonis").
