Kptlt. Ernst Cordes chose this emblem for U-763 in early 1943. The Unicorn is a symbol of the Austrian town of Bludenz, and U-763 and U-1195 enjoyed close relationships with that town.

Cordes took this emblem with him when he took command of U-1195 in November 1944.
