1998 was a busy year for uboat.net but 1999 was much more aggressive and demanding.

Enough said, onto the listing.

The database work

Literally hundreds and hundreds of man hours went into the database effort in 1999, starting in February. At the end of 1999 the databases are very advanced and almost "complete" (there really is no such thing). Here below are the main sections resulting from that effort.

Why was this done and what does it mean?
This was all done for a simple reason, it was becoming increasingly difficult to keep the site up-to-date in all aspects as it grew and information needed updating (one change here usually affected many other pages). The database will both make improvements much, much easier and will also make sure the same information is updated where needed. In short this brings the whole site up to much higher level of accuracy.

Also this will all simply mean we can concentrate on writing new and interesting stuff instead of fixing older material all the time.

• The Books
  This section was totally re-written and put into a database vastly improving its efficiency and services. The number of books found there also grew fantastically from some 830 to 1218 books (almost 50%) in roughly 2 months after its completion. New services such as book search engine, complex translation finder, listing of publishers and recommended listings increase its usefulness. Readers can now, as before, submit new books but now they should be online in 1-2 days.
• U-boat profiles
  This core element of the site was totally redone from the database. Now all U-boats commissioned, midget boats and planned but not completed boats (over 3800 all in all) can be found through the new U-boat Finder.
• The Men
  This section was put into the database through a major effort at the end of 1999. The fruits of that work will be launched in early Jan 2000. This includes all commanders, all commands on all U-boats, ranks, decorations and more.
• Events on this day
  This new and exciting page prints out, as its name strongly suggests, all events we have in our databases (and are ready for publication) for the day in question.
• U-boat related Movies
  Here we put the pages through a complete re-design and additions. Now we have about 190 movies in there, all served from the database. We added about 140 movies to the system, up from 50 by the end of 1998.
• U-boat losses 1939-1945 set of pages was re-written from scratch from the database.
• The section Men Lost from U-boats was re-written from scratch from the database.
• Many pages from the Fighting the U-boats section now include information from the database.
• The site grew by over 3000 pages to 5550 pages. We also added some 150 photographs.
• Number of daily visitors increased from 2220 to 3350 in 1999.
• Book reviews grew from 19 to 43. There are now being served from the new books database.
• We read about 52 new Commanders of the Week.
