Notes on event

At 16.27 hours on 29 Sep 1944, U-310 fired FAT torpedoes at convoy RA-60 off the North Cape and hit two ships, the Edward H. Crockett and Samsuva.

The Samsuva (Master Clifford H. Churchill) broke in two after being hit by a torpedo but remained afloat on her cargo and had to be scuttled by HMS Musketeer (G 86) and HMS Bulldog (H 91). Three crew members were lost. The master, 36 crew members and 20 gunners were picked up by the British rescue ship Rathlin (Master August Banning DSO) and landed at Clyde on 5 October.
