Notes on event

At 00.45 hours on 18 February 1940 the unescorted and neutral Ellin was hit on port side forward by one G7e torpedo from U-37 about 60 miles north-northwest of Cape Villano. The hit had not much effect and the ship only settled slowly by the bow, so at 01.09 hours a second torpedo was fired as coup de grĂ¢ce that struck amidships and caused the ship to sink immediately after breaking in two. The survivors were rescued by the Spanish fishing trawler Manin.
