At 01.28 hours on 19 June 1940 U-25 attacked a small convoy about 100 miles west-southwest of Ouessant and hit the Brumaire with one torpedo, before the U-boat collided with another steamer in convoy. The conning tower and periscope were damaged and the U-boat had to abort her patrol.

The damaged Brumaire was sunk the next day by German aircraft off Belle-Île in position 47°14N/03°16W.
