Notes on event

At 21.19 hours on 9 July 1940 the unescorted Aylesbury (Master Theodore Pryser) was hit aft by one G7e torpedo from U-43 and sank by the stern 15 minutes after being hit in the engine room by a coup de grĂ¢ce at 21.35 hours about 230 miles southwest of Cape Clear. The ship had been missed by a first G7e torpedo at 21.16 hours. The master and 34 crew members were picked up by HMS Harvester (H 19) (LtCdr M. Thornton, RN) and HMS Havelock (H 88) (Capt E.B.K. Stevens, DSC, RN) and landed at Liverpool.
