Hans Johannsen went to sea at age 14, and worked for the Hamburg-Amerika line before the war.

When his U-boat was sunk he was taken prisoner. On 12 February 1944 he was one of five U-boat commanders to escape from the POW camp at Papago Park, Arizona (USA). Travelling with two others, he was recaptured at a point some thirty miles across the Mexican border.

After the war Johannsen became an official on the Kiel Canal.
