The Commander Interviews

Reinhard Hardegen

Prepared by Stephen Ames

Today Reinhard Hardegen (wartime commander of U-123) walks with a bounce, smiles readily, and appears full of vigor with a ramrod straight back. His mind is sharp, his eyes keen, his handshake strong. I hope I am in the half the shape he is when I am his age!

We stood on the deck of a sailing ship at the Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum (German maritime museum) in Bremerhaven during this interview I conducted for radio in 1992.

The Interview

#1 (8:04) Wav Hardegen describes how he came to the U-boat Corps, his wartime and post war experiences.
